What are Eye Flashes and Floaters?

Flashes are like flickering lights, often seen at the corner of your eye, while floaters are small, shadowy shapes that seem to glide through your vision. These phenomena occur due to changes in the jelly-like substance (vitreous) inside your eyes. Although usually harmless, persistent or sudden onset of flashes and floaters could signal an underlying issue requiring attention.

Understanding the Causes and Concerns

Flashes and floaters are common visual phenomena, but what causes them? Let’s explore the reasons behind these visual disturbances:

arrow-circle-right-3 arrow-circle-right-3-light Vitreous Degeneration

As you age, the vitreous gel inside your eye changes in consistency and shrinks, causing it to pull on the retina. This traction can create flashes of light in your vision.

arrow-circle-right-3 arrow-circle-right-3-light Vitreous Detachment

When the vitreous gel pulls away from the retina, it can cause floaters. This detachment is a natural part of aging and can result in the perception of specks or threads floating in your visual field.

If the vitreous pulls too hard on the retina, it can tear the delicate retinal tissue. This tear might appear as a sudden onset of floaters and flashes of light. A retinal detachment can cause a significant increase in floaters and flashes and requires immediate medical attention.

Certain types of migraines, particularly those with aura, can cause visual disturbances, including flashes of light.

People with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. This damage can lead to the perception of floaters and flashes of light.

PVD is a common age-related condition where the vitreous gel separates from the retina. This separation can cause floaters and flashes, often described as a sudden shower of black dots or lines.
